WORDS OF WISDOM AND BEAUTY `

~~~~~~
We do not want schools....
they will teach us to have churches.
We do not want churches....
they will teach us to quarrel about God.
We do not want to learn that.
We may quarrel with men sometimes
about things on this earth,
but we never quarrel about God.
We do not want to learn that.
Heinmot Tooyalaket ( Chief Joseph), Nez Perce Leader
The True Peace
The first peace, which is the most important,
is that which comes within the souls of people
when they realize their relationship,
their oneness, with the universe and all its powers,
and when they realize that at the center
of the universe dwells Wakan-Taka (the Great Spirit),
and that this center is really everywhere, it is within each of us.
This is the real peace, and the others are but reflections of this.
The second peace is that which is made between two individuals,
and the third is that which is made between two nations.
But above all you should understand that there can never
be peace between nations until there is known that true peace,
which, as I have often said, is within the souls of men.
Black Elk, Oglala Sioux & Spiritual Leader (1863 - 1950)
~~~~~~

May the stars carry your sadness away,
May the flowers fill your heart with beauty,
May hope forever wipe away your tears,
And, above all, may silence make you strong.

Chief Dan George

~~~~~~
Hold On
Hold on to what is good,
Even if it's a handful of earth.
Hold on to what you believe,
Even if it's a tree that stands by itself.
Hold on to what you must do,
Even if it's a long way from here.
Hold on to your life,
Even if it's easier to let go.
Hold on to my hand,
Even if someday I'll be gone away from you.
A Pueblo Indian Prayer
~~~~~~

And while I stood there
I saw more than I can tell,
and I understood more than I saw;
for I was seeing in a sacred manner
the shapes of things in the spirit,
and the shape of all shapes as they must
live together like one being.

Black Elk, Black Elk Speaks

~~~~~~
O' GREAT SPIRIT
help me always
to speak the truth quietly,
to listen with an open mind
when others speak,
and to remember the peace
that may be found in silence.
Cherokee Prayer
~~~~~~

I do not think the measure of a civilization
is how tall its buildings of concrete are,
But rather how well its people have learned to relate
to their environment and fellow man.

Sun Bear of the Chippewa Tribe

~~~~~~
There is a road in the hearts of all of us, hidden and seldom traveled,
which leads to an unknown, secret place.
The old people came literally to love the soil,
and they sat or reclined on the ground with a feeling of
being close to a mothering power.
Their teepees were built upon the earth
and their altars were made of earth.
The soul was soothing, strengthening, cleansing and healing.
That is why the old Indian still sits upon the earth instead of
propping himself up and away from its life giving forces.
For him, to sit or lie upon the ground is to be able to think more deeply
and to feel more keenly. He can see more clearly into the mysteries of
life and come closer in kinship to other lives about him.
Elizabeth Kapu'uwailani Lindsey: Curating humanity's heritage | Video on TED.com
Elizabeth Lindsey: Curating humanity's heritage | Video on TED.com
About this talk
It's been said that when an elder dies, it's as if a library is burned. Anthropologist Elizabeth Lindsey, a National Geographic Fellow, collects the deep cultural knowledge passed down as stories and lore.
About Elizabeth Lindsey
Elizabeth Lindsey is a fellow of the National Geographic Society. Her mission: to keep ancestral voices alive by recording indigenous wisdom and traditions.
Why you should listen to her:
Elizabeth Kapu'uwailani Lindsey wants the world to remember the people who came before us. The actor-turned-anthropologist has made it her mission to find, preserve and share the knowledge and traditions of indigenous populations before they disappear. She’s working with Google to create a geospatial Map of the Human Story, using the indigenous science of wayfinding to chart tales at risk of being lost.
In 2011, Lindsey, who's the first female fellow and first Polynesian explorer at the National Geographic Society, will set out on a 186-day global expedition to document what she calls "teachings critical to navigating the complexity of our times." Lindsey’s 1996 documentary Then There Were None, which chronicled the near-extinction of native Hawaiians, has become a must-see in many history classrooms. She was named Hawaii’s Woman of the Year in 2004.
"To have a Native person research indigenous knowledge and practices marks a new era for National Geographic. The society is trying to get away from the image of the white explorer ‘sticking a flag on something.’"
current.org
She is so right, "The planet is our canoe, and we are the voyagers, true navigation begins in the human heart. It is the most important map of all. Together, may we journey well."
Thank you Kaimana for this!
New Comet Visible in Early Morning Sky
Skywatcher Michael Jäger of Stixendorf, Austria, took this photo of the newfound comet McNaught C/2009 R1 on June 6, 2010, while the comet was visible in the northeastern morning sky. Full Story. Credit: Michael Jäger
A recently discovered comet is surprising skywatchers by becoming brighter than predictions had first suggested and can now be seen with the unaided eye during the next few weeks.
Comet McNaught, officially catalogued as C/2009 R1, was discovered by Australian astronomer Robert McNaught last September using the using the 0.5-meter Uppsala Schmidt telescope and a CCD camera. It's the 51st comet that bears McNaught's name.
Although initially an extremely faint object, enough observations of the newfound comet were made to allow Brian Marsden of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory in Cambridge, Mass., to calculate an orbit.
Comet McNaught is expected to pass closest to the sun (perihelion) on July 2, at a distance of 37 million miles (60 million km). This sky map shows where to look in order to spot the comet in the morning sky. (see link)
The comet is visible now for people with dark skies away from urban and suburban lighting. By mid-June it may be an easy skywatching target for most people.
Comets brighten when the get nearer to the sun, because solar radiation boils icy particles and dust off the comet's nucleus. A cloud of material called a head, or coma, and sometimes a tail form. It's all illuminated by reflected sunlight.
This recently discovered comet, McNaught C/2009 R1, should not be confused with another dazzling comet to bear McNaught's name – C/2006 P1 McNaught – which also put on a show for skywatchers in 2007 that was so stunning, it earned the moniker "Great Comet of 2007." [Great Comet McNaught photos.] http://www.space.com/php/multimedia/imagegallery/igviewer.php?imgid=4559&gid=326
Comet brightens rapidly
As comet McNaught approached the sun, amateur and professional astronomers worldwide watched with interest as it slowly increased in brightness.
When April began, the comet was estimated at magnitude +12. That's still about 250 times dimmer than the faintest star that one might see without any optical aid. But the comet started brightening more rapidly in the days and weeks that followed and it's now bright enough to be glimpsed with the naked eye in a dark clear sky.
The most recent "reliable" observation was made by Alexandre Amorim of Florianopolis,Brazil who saw the comet on June 6 using 10x50 binoculars and estimated the magnitude as +5.5. That's about as bright as the faintest star in the bowl of the Little Dipper (on this scale, smaller numbers represent brighter objects).
In the coming days, the comet is expected to continue to brighten as it gets closer to the sun.
When and where to see it
If you want to get a view of the comet, you'll have to get up early in the morning. Set your alarm clock for at least two hours before sunrise. For most people that will mean around 3:30 a.m. local time. The comet is currently moving through the constellation of Perseus, the Hero, which at that early hour will be low in the northeast part of the sky.
The comet will pass to the south of the second magnitude star, Mirfak around June 14. Both star and comet will be about 20-degrees above the northeast horizon (10-degrees is roughly equal to the width of your clenched fist held at arm's length; so the comet will be about "two fists" up from the horizon).
Don't expect anything spectacular just yet, however.
The comet should appear as a dim and diffuse, circular patch of light. Binoculars or a small telescope will help to bring it out better; you might even make out a faint greenish color.
From the head of the comet, a narrow tail of gas extends. John Bortle, a well known comet observer, likens McNaught's appearance as resembling an "apple on a stick."
"From the few rough magnitude estimates I have seen posted, it would appear that the comet is perhaps a magnitude brighter than had been anticipated, but whether this trend will continue is, as usual, anybody's guess," Bortle said.
Getting Lower ... and Harder to See
After June 15, Comet McNaught will rapidly slide lower toward the north-northeast horizon, passing very close to the brilliant star Capella in the constellation Auriga around June 22 and a few mornings later very near to the second magnitude star Menkalinan.
By then, McNaught will be visible – albeit with some difficulty – both in the evening sky for a short while just after sunset very low above the north-northwest horizon and in the morning sky just before sunrise very low above the north-northeast horizon.
Comets are very unpredictable, but some astronomers say Comet McNaught might reach magnitude +2 by the end of June. If so, it won't rival the brightest stars in the sky, but it should be easy to spot and readily identifiable as a comet.
SPACE.com will provide updates on this new comet as conditions change. http://www.space.com/spacewatch/new-comet-mcnaught-visible-100608.html
Peyote Healing ~
RED ON
Now I can thank you sir, for the polluted air
And for the hundreds of times that you cut my hair
Cause after four hundred years of not seeming to care
It's about time I take a stand and about time I swear
I'm going to give my life to my brother the tree,
And for the mountain trout that flow free in the streams
And for the death of the fences that display lust and greed
And for the time that my Indian people can see
The day we can determine our own destiny
And for the day we unite as a people and say...
Red On!
VANISHING PRAYER~
Vanishing Prayer part 2
Just what were our Presidents and other leaders such as McCain doing during this time? In his so-called territory of "just" government?" And now "he" wants to be president of this united states of america? The "land of the free, home of the brave." Yes it did happen and it is still happening all over Indian Country and believe me when I tell you that it can and will happen to you too, no matter what your race or ethical/religious background may be. You think you own your home, the land it is built upon, think again! The earth belongs to no one, WE BELONG TO THE EARTH. And eventually she will get tired of us acting like parasites and shake us off her back, clean herself up and then "she" will begin again...but, the question is will we too begin again? Start treating Mother Earth as you should/would your own birth mother because she is what gave and continues to give you life!
It's worth thinking about as my friend Misty-Eve says and explains below:
If the Law of Attraction tells us that “like attracts like” in the mental world of thought, then what are we drawing into our lives with negative thoughts?
“The most detrimental thing that anyone can do to themselves is to do something that they believe they shouldn't be doing. All kinds of people take action without having aligned the energy with the action. And that's the only reason anything ever goes wrong for anybody, you see.”
PEACE & GOOD WILL TO ALL IN THE COMING TIMES....
ALL OF US, EVERYONE ON THIS BEAUTIFUL BLUE PLANET ARE GOING TO NEED IT.
IF YOU THINK THAT THIS IS THE ONLY INDIGENOUS GROUP OF PEOPLES ON THIS PLANET THAT HAVE HAD TO TAKE "THE LONGEST WALK" THINK AGAIN....STUDY WORLDWIDE HISTORY...AND REMEMBER "HISTORY ALWAYS REPEATS ITSELF"
KEEPING SILENT IS "NOT" THE ANSWER...YOU DECIDE...DO NOT LET ANY OTHER PERSON DO THAT FOR YOU...THE CHOICE IS YOURS...IF WORLD LEADERS WANT TO WAR UPON OTHERS LET THEM WAR AGAINST AND ONLY AGAINST THOSE OTHER WORLD LEADERS....LEAVE US OUT OF IT!
I hope and pray that we can stop this madness before it arrives at YOUR/MINE/OUR doorstep. What matters is NOT the physical things you think you own or possess, the spirit or soul lives forever...you are "FREE SOULS" choose freedom over the fear and control they will try and impose on you....the end of this life is just that...the end of THIS life...if it comes to that. That is worth fighting for but it will never be the end of our spirit, our soul, our existence in this universe. WE have the FREEDOM within us to be the best we can be to ourselves and to all life and that is really all that matters.
Smile and know that you are loved by the Creator of All that is...and that will never change. Be good to one another, help those who need it while not asking nor expecting anything in return....money, gold, silver, gems cannot be eaten.........nor will they keep you alive forever if that is your ultimate goal. Think peace, love, compassion and imagine a beautiful new world without all of the negatives that exist in this one. This world exists, it is very, very real and easily attainable...assume it is so and know it! We need to work together to achieve it and we will.
PEACE and Love to ALL LIFE
The justification for Public Law 93-531 passed by Congress in 1974 was that the Navajo-Hopi land dispute is so serious that 10,000 Navajos near Big Mountain, Arizona, must be relocated, forcibly if necessary. It would be the largest forced relocation of U.S. citizens since the relocation of Japanese-Americans during World War II.
But tradition-minded Navajo and Hopi claim there never was a land dispute. They say the dispute was invented to get the Navajos and their livestock off mineral-rich land in the Hopi reservation so it could be developed by mining companies such as Peabody Coal and Kerr-McGee.
HOPI WARN OF GREAT PURIFICATION
HOPI WARNING
Misty sun and moon halos now being seen around the earth fulfill one of the last signs, according to Hopi propecy, that signals the end of an age and that a Great Purification is about to begin.
"'Now we are at the very end of our trail. Many people no longer recognize the true path of the Great Spirit. They have, in fact, no respect for the Great Spirit or for our precious Mother Earth, who gives us all life.
Nature itself does not speak with a voice that we can easily understand... Who in this world can speak for nature and the spiritual energy that creates and flows through all life?''
Banyacya said it is necessary for human beings that have not separated themselves from the land and nature to speak out.
"If we humans do not wake up to the warnings, the great purification will come to destroy this world just as the previous worlds were destroyed.'' _ Hopi spiritual leader, Banyacya
CANADA APOLOGIZES FOR NATIVE SCHOOLS
BBC NEWS
Canada apology for native schools
Canada has apologised for forcing more than 100,000 aboriginal children to attend state-funded Christian boarding schools aimed at assimilating them.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper made the apology in parliament in Ottawa, in front of hundreds of ex-schoolchildren.
The schools operated from the late 19th Century until the 1990s, although most of them shut in the 1970s.
Accounts of physical and sexual abuse at the institutions, known as residential schools, have also emerged.
The churches that ran the schools apologised in the 1980s and 1990s.
Australia apologised for a similar policy in February.
'Reconciliation process'
Mr Harper said aboriginal Canadians had been waiting "a very long time" for an apology.
"I stand before you today to offer an apology to former students of Indian residential schools. The treatment of children in Indian residential schools is a sad chapter in our history."
He said the system had been based on the assumption that "aboriginal cultures and spiritual beliefs were inferior and unequal".
He went on: "We now recognise that, far too often, these institutions gave rise to abuse or neglect and were inadequately controlled, and we apologise for failing to protect you.
"The government of Canada sincerely apologises and asks the forgiveness of the aboriginal peoples of this country for failing them so profoundly. We are sorry."
The head of the Assembly of First Nations, Phil Fontaine, said it was important that Canada acknowledge what had happened.
Mr Fontaine was one of the first former schoolchildren to go public with his experiences of physical and sexual abuse at residential school.
A sincere and complete apology would go a long way in repairing the relationship between aboriginals and the Canadian government, he said.
However, some aboriginal leaders have expressed concern that they were not consulted on the wording of the apology.
Settlement deal
The federal government acknowledged 10 years ago that physical and sexual abuse in the schools was rampant.
CANADA'S ABORIGINALS
Made up of Indians, known as First Nations people, Metis and Inuit
Population 1.2 million out of total 33 million Canadians
48% of aboriginals are under 25 years old (31% for non-aboriginals)
Unemployment rate for 25-64 year olds almost three times the national rate
34% do not complete secondary school (15% for non-aboriginals)
Suicide rate among young aboriginals almost twice the national average
Sources: StatsCan, Aboriginal Health Organisation
Many schoolchildren recall being beaten for speaking their languages, and losing touch with their parents and culture.
The legacy of the system has been cited by aboriginals as the root cause of epidemic rates of alcoholism and drug addiction among their people.
The apology is part of a C$2bn ($1.9bn; £990m) deal between the government, churches and the surviving former schoolchildren.
Under the agreement, they have begun receiving financial compensation for their suffering.
A truth and reconciliation commission has also been set up, which will be granted access to government and church records.
The Hopi Message to the United Nations
by Mr Thomas Banyacya
Kykotsmovi, Arizona
The presentation by Mr Thomas Banyacya, the final speaker, was preceded by three shouts by Oren Lyons, Faithkeeper of the Six Nations, and first speaker of the day. The shouts were a spiritual announcement to the Great Spirit of the of the people assembled and the intention to give a message of spiritual importance.
Thomas then sprinkled corn meal next to the podium of the General Assembly and made a brief remark in Hopi that translates as follows:
Hopi Spiritual leaders had an ancient prophecy that some day world leaders would gather in a Great House of Mica with rules and regulations to solve the world problems without war. I am amazed to see the prophecy has come true and you are here today! But only a handful of United Nations Delegates are present to hear the Motee Sinom (Hopi for First People) from around the world who spoke here today.
(In English:) My name is Banyacya of the Wolf, Fox and Coyote Clan and I am a member of the Hopi sovereign nation. Hopi in our language means a peaceful, kind, gentle, truthful people. The traditional Hopi follows the spiritual path that was given to us by Massau'u the Great Spirit. We made a sacred covenant to follow his life plan at all times, which includes the responsibility of taking care of this land and life for his divine purpose. We have never made treaties with any foreign nation, including the United States, but for many centuries we have honored this sacred agreement. Our goals are not to gain political control, monetary wealth nor military power, but rather to pray and to promote the welfare of all living beings and to preserve the world in a natural way. We still have our ancient sacred stone tablets and spiritual religious societies which are the foundations of the Hopi way of life. Our history says our white brother should have retained those same sacred objects and spiritual foundations.
In 1948, all traditional Hopi spiritual leaders met and spoke of things I felt strongly were of great importance to all people. They selected four interpreters to carry their message of which I am the only one still living today. At the time, I was given a sacred prayer feather by the spiritual leaders. I made a commitment to carry the Hopi message of peace and deliver warnings from prophesies known since the time the previous world was destroyed by flood and our ancestors came to this land.
My mission was to open the doors of this Great House of Mica to native peoples. The Elders said to knock four times and this commitment was fulfilled when I delivered a letter and the sacred prayer feather I had been given to John Washburn in the Secretary General's office in October, 1991. I am bringing part of the Hopi message to you here today. We have only ten minutes to speak and time is late so I am making my statement short.
At the meeting in 1948, Hopi leaders 80, 90 and even 100 years old explained that the creator made the first world in perfect balance where humans spoke one language, but humans turned away from moral and spiritual principles. They misused their spiritual powers for selfish purposes. They did not follow nature's rules. Eventually the world was destroyed by sinking of land and separation of land by what you would call major earthquakes. Many died and only a small handful survived.
Then this handful of peaceful people came into the second world. They repeated their mistakes and the world was destroyed by freezing which you call the great Ice Age.
The few survivors entered the third world. That world lasted a long time and as in previous worlds, the people spoke one language. The people invented many machines and conveniences of high technology, some of which have not yet been seen in this age. They even had spiritual powers that they used for good. They gradually turned away from natural laws and pursued only material things and finally only gambled while they ridiculed spiritual principles. No one stopped them from this course and the world was destroyed by the great flood that many nations still recall in their ancient history or in their religions.
The Elders said again only a small groups escaped and came to this fourth world where we now live. Our world is in terrible shape again even though the Great Spirit gave us different languages and sent us to four corners of the world and told us to take care the the Earth and all that is in it.
This Hopi ceremonial rattle represents Mother Earth. The line running around it is a time line and indicates that we are in the final days of the prophecy. What have you, as individuals, as nations and as the world body been doing to to take care of this Earth? In the Earth today, humans poison their own food, water and air with pollution. Many of us, including children, are left to starve. Many wars are still being fought. Greed and concern for material things is a common disease.
In this western hemisphere, our homeland, many original native people are landless, homeless, starving and have no medical help.
The Hopi knew humans would develop many powerful technologies that would be abused. In this century, we have seen the First World War and the Second World War in which the predicted gourd of ashes, which you call the atomic bomb, fell from the sky with great destruction. Many thousands of people were destroyed in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
For many years there has been great fear and danger of World War Three. The Hopi believe the Persian Gulf War was the beginning of World War Three but it was stopped and the worst weapons of destruction were not used. This is now a time to weigh the choices for our future. We do have a choice. If you, the nations of this Earth, create another great war, the Hopi believe we humans will burn ourselves to death with ashes. That's why the spiritual Elders stress strongly that the United Nations fully open the door for native spiritual leaders as soon as possible.
Nature itself does not speak with a voice that we can easily understand. Neither can the animals and birds we are threatening with extinction talk to us. Who in this world can speak for nature and the spiritual energy that creates and flows through all life? In every continent are human beings who are like you but who have not separated themselves from the land and from nature. It is through their voice that Nature can speak to us. You have heard those voices and many messages from the four corners of the world today. I have studied comparative religion and I think in your own nations and cultures you have knowledge of the consequences of living out of balance with nature and spirit. The native peoples of the world have seen and spoken to you about the destruction of their lives and homelands, the ruination of nature and the desecration of their sacred sites. It is time the United Nations used its rules to investigate these occurrences and stop them now.
The Four Corners area of the Hopi is bordered by four sacred mountains. The spiritual center within is a sacred site our prophecies say will have special purpose in the future for mankind to survive and now should be left in its natural state. All nations must protect this spiritual center.
The Hopi and all original native people hold the land in balance by prayer, fasting and performing ceremonies. Our spiritual Elders still hold the land in the Western Hemisphere in balance for all living beings, including humans. No one should be relocated from their sacred homelands in this Western Hemisphere or anywhere in the world. Acts of forced relocation, such as Public Law 93-531 in the United States, must be repealed.
The United Nations stands on our native homeland. The United Nations talks about human rights, equality and justice and yet the native people have never had a real opportunity to speak to this assembly since its establishment until today. It should be the mission of your nations and this assembly to use your power and rules to examine and work to cure the damage people have done to this Earth and to each other. Hopi Elders know that was your mission and they wait to see whether you will act on it now.
Nature, the First People and the spirit of our ancestors are giving you loud warnings. Today, December 10, 1992, you see increasing floods, more damaging hurricanes, hail storms, climate changes and earthquakes as our prophesies said would come. Even animals and birds are warning us with strange change in their behavior such as the beaching of whales. Why do animals act like they know about the earth's problems and most humans act like they know nothing? If we humans do not wake up to the warnings, the great purification will come to destroy this world just as the previous worlds were destroyed.
(Thomas and Oren Lyons held up a picture of a large rock drawing in Hopiland)
This rock drawing shows part of the Hopi prophecy. There are two paths. The first with technology but separate from natural and spiritual law leads to these jagged lines representing chaos. The lower path is one that remains in harmony with natural law. Here we see a line that represents a choice like a bridge joining the paths. If we return to spiritual harmony and live from our hearts, we can experience a paradise in this world. If we continue only on this upper path, we will come to destruction.
Its up to all of us, as children of Mother Earth, to clean up this mess before it's too late.
The Elders request that during this International Year for the Worlds Indigenous Peoples, the United Nations keep that door open for spiritual leaders from the four corners of the world to come to speak to you for more than a few minutes as soon as possible. The Elders also request that eight investigative teams visit the native areas of the world to observe and tell the truth about what is being done and stop these nations from moving in this self- destructive direction.
If any of you leaders want to learn more about the spiritual vision and power of the Elders, I invite you to come out to Hopiland and sit down with our real spiritual leaders in their sacred Kivas where they will reveal the ancient secrets of survival and balance.
I hope that all members of this assembly that know the spiritual way will not just talk about it, but in order to have real peace and harmony, will follow what it says across the United Nations wall: "They will beat their swords into plowshares and study war no more." Lets, together, do that now!
Epilogue
The night before the presentations of the native people from around the world to the General Assembly, there was a total eclipse of the moon over New York City and the sky was clear. The evening after the presentation by Mr Banyacya and the other native spokespersons, heavy rain and strong wind began. The weathermen had been calling for a snowstorm but what came the following day were the worst floods in New York's memory. Major highways were washed away by the sea and the United Nations itself experienced flooding of its lower subfloors, forcing a shutdown of its heating and air conditioning and all personnel were dismissed at three o'clock.
In the ground floor meeting room, where on December 11, native peoples were meeting representatives of various UN agencies, Thomas Banyacya spontaneously called on all the participants, including UN officials, to form a great circle. All the Elders were in the center and Thomas called in some non-native people as well. Each silently said a prayer. The forming of the circle of unity of all people from the four corners of the Earth was more than just a symbolic act. One participant said she had never felt herself to be in such a safe place. Later, several people present noted that no further storm damage occurred in Manhattan and that the storm itself abated that afternoon.
Thomas Banyacya's eyes were deeper than the deepest ocean; you could see the wisdom and love with just one glance. He was and still is to me one of the greatest peace maker's and wisdom keeper's....
I will always honor him and his efforts to make this world a more beautiful place.
HENRIETTA MANN-Bernard S. Rodey Award
Henrietta Mann said in a Mirage interview, "I just dance through life." I'm more inclined to say that she dances with life, a partner with the best of it. And all of us, but especially young Native Americans, who are witness to this dance are the better for it.
Henri's great grandmother, a Cheyenne prayer woman, had no inkling when she presented her new great granddaughter to the four sacred directions, the earth, and the sky
…that Henri would grow up to be honored as the Cheyenne Indian of the Year and the National American Indian Woman of the Year…
… that Rolling Stone Magazine would name her one of the top ten leading professors in the US
… that she would earn a doctorate in American studies at the University of New Mexico as a Danforth Scholar
… that she would be a progenitor of the entire field of Native American Studies
… that she would teach at Berkeley, Harvard, and the Universities of Montana and Montana State, where she would hold the first endowed chair in Native American Studies, serve as advisor to the President, and establish its Council of Elders, composed of all the Montana tribal leaders
… that she would be named the founding president of the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribal College in Oklahoma
… that she would be featured as one of five 20th Century Women Educators in the 20th Century Women's Poster Series of the National Women's History Project
… that she would become a consultant to the Discovery Channel, HBO, PBS (including Ken Burns' documentary The West) and others…
… that she would serve on the board of the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of the American Indian, and on the boards of many other organizations, including the American Indian Science and Engineering Society centered in Albuquerque…
… that she would publish a book, Cheyenne-Arapaho Education…
… that she would serve in positions of prominence with the Bureau of Indian affairs.
The list goes on and on.
What Henri's great grandmother, herself a massacre survivor, might have had an inkling about would be the inner spirit that unfolded in her great granddaughter, who still speaks her Southern Cheyenne language…
… enabling her to persevere through the difficult years she spent earning her doctorate at UNM while rearing four teen-aged children and caring for her terminally ill husband, and grieving for brother, her uncle, her stepsister, and her mother, all of whom she lost during that time
… enabling her to complete her Sundance Life and become a highly revered spiritualist, a primary woman, in the Cheyenne Sundance.
… motivating the American Red Cross to ask her to pray for peace at the site of the World Trade Center after the 9/11 attacks.
… culminating in the wisdom of one who balances love with responsibility, and personal growth with gratitude.
What Henri's great grandmother might be most proud of now might be Henri's saying that her "entire goal in life is to be nothing but a Good Cheyenne Woman."
As witnessed by Henri, the qualities of a "Good Cheyene Woman" must be ones we should all emulate. I could not be prouder or more pleased to offer our Bernard S. Rodey Award to Henrietta Mann today. Its inscription includes her Cheyenne name, which I won't try to pronounce but will translate: "Woman Who Comes to Offer Prayer." Henri, thank you for serving as a role model for us all.
NATURE IS THE BEST PREACHER --LIFE THE BEST TEACHER
October 1970
WALKING BUFFALO
DA NA WAQ (WHITE BEAVER)
AKWESASNE NOTES/ROOSEVELTOWN, NEW YORK 13683
March 20, 1871 - a great day in Morley, Alberta. It was on that day
that little Tatanga Mani (Walking Buffalo) was, born. In the years
that followed, he was adopted by white missionary John McDougall,
educated in white men's schools, returned to the reserve at Morley to
advise and guide his people, and finally in his old age, was asked to
act as an emissary of peace on behalf of the Canadian Government.
Join our Stoney brothers and hear his words.
"Nobody tries to make the coyotes act like beavers, or the eagles
behave like robins. Some Christians see themselves as set apart from
the rest of the animal and plant world by superiority, even as a
special creation.
Perhaps the principles of brotherhood which the world urgently needs
come more easily to the Indian. "
"Do you know that trees talk? Well, they do. They talk to each other,
and they'll talk to you, if you will listen.
Trouble is, many white people don't listen. They rarely listened to
the Indians, and so I don't suppose they'll listen to the other
voices in nature. But I have learned a lot from trees, sometimes
about the weather, sometimes about animals, sometimes about the Great
Spirit.
"We were lawless people but we were on pretty good terms with the
Great Spirit, creator and ruler of all. Many of you whites assumed we
were savages. You didn't understand our prayers. You didn't try to
understand.
When we sang or: praises to the sun or moon or wind, you said we were
worshipping idols. Without understanding, you condemned us as lost
souls just because our form of worship was different from yours.
"We saw the Great Spirit's work in almost everything: sun, moon,
trees, wind, and mountains. Sometimes we approached him through these
things. Was that so bad?
I think we have a true belief in the supreme being, a stronger faith
than that of most of the whites who have called us pagans. The red
savages have always lived closer to nature than have the white
savages.
Nature is the book of that great power which one man calls God and
which we call the Great Spirit. But, what difference does a name make?
"We had none of your denominations to split us, it introduce hatreds
in the name of religion. We had no man-made guides to 'right living';
nature was our guide. Nature is still Bible, and I've just returned
after many days of studying it.
"I'll tell you what I think. We were on better terms with the Great
Spirit before the white man came than we were after he confused us by
attempting to frighten its into joining his churches.
As devil worshippers, they said we were heading right down the road
to hell. Frighten us? Who wouldn't be frightened if they were told
they'd burn in a lake of fire forever if they didn't accept certain
teachings. The white man meant well. Many of the missionaries were my
friends, but they underestimated the Indian faith when they used fear
to make us change.
There is no such thing as hell to our native religion, and we can
never imagine the Great Spirit choosing to inflict everlasting
torture on man as a punishment.
"As I understand nature's ruler, he would not restrict the truth to a
few favoured humans, allowing the others to remain in eternal
darkness. If the Great Spirit is prepared to reveal secrets of
importance to people, he will give all humans in all lands an equal
chance of getting that enlightenment.
"My people have been searching for the truth for generations, and
they continue to find it. All races of people have conducted such
searches. Perhaps that explains why nearly all the world's religions
have points in common, like charity forgiveness, and belief in life
after death.
"Crowfoot of the Blackfeet tribe was a thinker, as everyone agrees,
but he never gave up his native religion. They coaxed him, but he
held on to his own beliefs. The old chief didn't ridicule your
religion and its teachers, but his own faith brought him enough
satisfaction and comfort.
The same could be said about Piapot. For years he was under pressure
to change. He didn't try to convert white men to his religion, but he
hated bigotry and he had no time for people who contended that the
white man's religion was inspired by the Creator but the Indian's was
not. Who do they suppose inspired the Indian's religion?"
At 87 years of age in London, England, he said: "It's not right
raising kids so far from nature. I suppose your boys and girls have
never seen pussy willows, robins building nests, or grass covered
hills. This pavement is fine for cars, but it is hard medicine for
children.
"Hills are always more beautiful than stone buildings, you know.
Living in a city is an artificial existence. Lots of people hardly
ever feel real soil under their feet, see plants grow except in
flower pots, or get far enough beyond the street lights to catch the
enchantment of a night sky studded with stars. When people live far
from scenes of the Great Spirit's making, it's easy for them to
forget his laws. "
In Germany: "I remember the war years. We were led to hate the
Germans. Now I think they are good people. I'd pitch my tent here
anytime. I'll never hate anybodv again. Hating hurts me more than it
hurts the other fellow. "
To all Indians, he said: "You see, we lost our land and our freedom,
but we don't have to lose all our Indian ways and habits. As good
Indians, we can make a substantial contribution to Canadian culture.
It may not have occurred to many white men that red, black, and
yellow peoples might have some good ideas about satisfying the
world's needs.
1'll never try to justify the foolish fighting and scalping my people
did, but in some ways, we had better ways of living. At least we kept
our fighting to small wars, whereas the so-called civilized whites go
in for big conflicts. "There's a lot of madness in the white man's
world.
We think whites would be better off to slow down and live closer to
the soil and forests and growing things, instead of galloping around
like stampeding buffaloes in cutback country. If they would take some
of our advice, they might find a contentment which they had not
discovered in their mad rush for money and for the pleasures which
they think it will buy. "
To all White Men, he said: "It's strange, but in trying to find
solutions to Indian problems, the authorities speak to nearly
everybody but Indians. Many of us could offer sound advice on this
question. But remember, we're proud of our race, and we want to
continue to be Indians. I was born with a bronze skin and I like it.
Some of my friends were born white or black or yellow. They were not
consulted. But that's all right. There are yellow roses, white roses,
and red roses and the fragrance of one is about as nice as another.
I hope my children will live in a world where people of all colors
can sit and work together without having to conform completely to the
majority's will . . . You must accept us as Indians who want to be
Indians and who are proud to be Indians. "
Death claimed our wise brother December 26, 1967, and the entire
world mourned. Any fool can be quarrelsome and belligerant. Being
half good and half bad takes neither effort nor skill. But being a
man of peace requires bravery.
Hopi Prophecy and Comet Holmes, "Blue Kachina"
A spectacular explosion caused comet 17P/Holmes to increase in size and brightness on October 24. The comet is now a half a million times brighter than before the eruption began. It continues to expand and is now the largest single object in the Solar system, being bigger than the Sun. The eruption continues at a steady 0.5 km/sec (1100 mph) rate. Holmes is still visible to the naked eye as a fuzzy star anytime after dark, high in the northeast sky. It is faintly visible from cities, and
from dark country locations is truly remarkable.
http://www.ifa.hawaii.edu/faculty/jewitt/holmes.html
This is an astounding story. When an object suddenly, unexpectedly, appears in our solar system THAT IS BIGGER THAN THE SUN, and can be seen with the naked eye, and is BLUE, it could be one of those heavenly events like the Star of Bethlehem that foretell coming events. I would also call your attention to the seven seals in revelations
(I'll write more about that when I have time.)
From the Hopi:
"The return of the Blue Star (also known as Nan ga sohu Katchina) will be the alarm clock that tells us of the new day and new way of life, a new world that is coming. This is where the changes will begin. They will start as fires that burn within us, and we will burn up with desires and conflict if we do not remember the original teachings, and return to the peaceful way of life.
"Not far behind the twins will come the Purifier the Red Katchina, who will bring the Day of Purification. On this day the Earth, her creatures and all life as we know it will change forever. There will be messengers that will precede this coming of the Purifier. They will leave
messages to those on Earth who remember the old ways.
" The messages will be found written in the living stone, through the sacred grains, and even the waters. (these could be the crop circles which have been found even in ice) From the Purifier will issue forth a great Red Light. All things will change in their manner of being.
Every living thing will be offered the opportunity to change from the largest to the smallest thing."
What follows are two longer expositions of Hopi prophecy. Note that the events listed below were predicted many centuries ago and have been passed down. They were also all carved into Prophecy Rock at Hopi many, many years ago:
The Nine Signs of Hopi Prophecy
From White Feather, Bear Clan, Hopi Tribe
"These are the Signs that great destruction is here: The world shall rock to and fro. The white man will battle people in other lands -- those who possessed the first light of wisdom. There will be many columns of smoke
and fire such as the white man has made in the deserts not far from here.
Those who stay and live in the places of the Hopi shall be safe. Then there will be much to rebuild. And soon, very soon afterward, Pahana will return. He shall bring with him the dawn of the Fifth World. He shall plant the seeds of his wisdom in our hearts. Even now the seeds are
being planted. These shall smooth the way to the Emergence into the Fifth World."
The Fourth World shall end soon, and the Fifth World will begin. This the elders everywhere know. The Signs over many years have been fulfilled, and so few are left.
First Sign: We were told of the coming of the white-skinned men, like Pahana, but not living like Pahana -- men who took the land that was not theirs and who struck their enemies with thunder. (Guns)
Second Sign: Our lands will see the coming of spinning wheels filled with voices. (Covered wagons)
Third Sign: A strange beast like a buffalo but with great long horns, will overrun the land in large numbers. (Longhorn cattle)
Fourth Sign: The land will be crossed by snakes of iron. (Railroad tracks)
Fifth Sign: The land shall be cris-crossed by a giant spider's web. (Power and telephone lines)
Sixth Sign: The land shall be cris-crossed with rivers of stone that make pictures in the sun. (Concrete roads and their mirage-producing effects.)
Seventh Sign: You will hear of the sea turning black, and many living things dying because of it. (Oil spills)
Eighth Sign: You will see many youth, who wear their hair long like our people, come and join the tribal nations, to learn our ways and wisdom. (Hippies)
Ninth and Last Sign: You will hear of a dwelling-place in the heavens, above the earth, that shall fall with a great crash. It will appear as a blue star. Very soon after this, the ceremonies of the Hopi people will
cease.
The following is an excerpt from LAST CRY Native American Prophecies & Tales of the End Times, by Dr. Robert Ghost Wolf © 1994-2004:
"The story of the Blue Kachina is a very old story, very old. I have been aware of the story of the Blue Kachina since I was very young. Frank Waters also wrote about Saquasohuh, the Blue Star Kachina in The Book of the Hopi, The story came from Grandfather Dan, Oldest Hopi.
"It was told to me that first the Blue Kachina would start to be seen at the dances, and would make his appearance known to the children in the plaza during the night dance. This event would tell us that the end times
are very near. Then the Blue Star Kachina would hysically appear in our heavens which would mean that we were in the end times.
"In the Final days we will look up in our heavens and we will witness the return of the two brothers who helped create this world in the birthing time. Poganghoya is the guardian of our North Pole and his Brother Palongawhoya is the guardian of the South pole. In the final days the
Blue Star Katchina will come to be with his nephews and they will return the Earth to its natural rotation which is counter clock wise.
"This fact is evidenced in many petraglyphs that speak of the Zodiac, and within the Mayan and Egyptian pyramids. The rotation of the Earth has been manipulated by not so benevolent Star beings. The twins will be seen in our North Western skies. They will come and visit to see who still remembered the original teachings flying in their Patuwvotas, or flying shields. They will bring many of their star family with them in the final days.
"The return of the Blue Star Katchina who is also known as Nan ga sohu will be the alarm clock that tells us of the new day and new way of life, a new world that is coming. This is where the changes will begin. They will start as fires that burn within us, and we will burn up
with desires and conflict if we do not remember the original teachings, and return to the peaceful way of life.
" Not far behind the twins will come the Purifier The Red Katchina, who will bring the Day of Purification. On this day the Earth, her creatures and all life as we know it will change forever. There will be messengers that will precede this coming of the Purifier. They will leave
messages to those on Earth who remember the old ways.
